|An Interesting Story about how this web
site came about...
this website that I think you'll find amusing - or at least
- besides that fact that my alt tag and descriptive image file name helped me sell the rights to use http://frenchtown.com/hotelmoderne/paris01.jpg to a British publisher of accordian music CD's for $100...
I created this site one day when I was in Paris.
My friend had gone to Berlin for a week, and we gave up her friend's apartment while she was gone. I had been staying at the hotel while she was away and was going to a cyber-cafe (near where I took the photo referred to above) to work on surveys with Steve - while I was in Paris and he was in Florida... This was during the summer of 1998, before we had our ATT contract and when we were still struggling to get our little business started. We had some money, but not a lot and I had 3-4 survey projects to work on - and which I continued to work on even though I was in Paris for a month.
The manager of the hotel was intrigued that I was a webmaster - and from "Frenchtown.com", of all places... (French Town, Paris... get it?) and that I was going to the cyber cafe every day to work.
Well, on the day before I was due to check out, I lost my Mastercard. Stuck, broke, thousands of miles from home and my girlfriend had gone to Berlin for the week. I was stuck. And she had just given me a stern lecture on financial responsibility before she left, so I really didn't want to ask her for help...
But I had an interesting edge. My computer had crashed the day I arrived in Paris - which is why I had to rent space at the cyber cafe to work. But my digital camera was still working okay.
The manager was already impressed and intrigued by my internet work, so when I suggested that maybe the hotel ought to have a web site, and that I could do it and have it online on the same day.... in exchange for my hotel bill... (;)) - he readily agreed.
We went through the hotel and took a bunch of photos. Then I went to the cyber cafe and built this website, printed out the pages as proof that the work had been done (they had no computer at the hotel at that time), and then I went home to the hotel - where I was warmly welcomed with my web page print-outs.
My replacement credit card arrived a few days later, but my hotel bill had been paid... bartered for an instant website.
